Wingback chairs–an old friend gets a new look.
Posted by: Dorothy Hall in Home Improvement News Add commentsWe are all familiar with the cozy, inviting and friendly look of wingback chairs. In fact, you probably have one somewhere in your home or, at the very least, your grandmother sure does.
Wingback chairs were designed to keep the cold draft off your back, neck or head during a time when homes and castles were very chilly. Natural insulation can only do so much! Placed near the fireplace the high back and turned in sides (the wings) kept you cozy and warm.
This iconic design has gone through several changes over the years to modernize it and make it work for current lifestyles. Take for example, the mid-century version found in the Arne Jacobsen Egg Chair. Today, Century Furniture has partnered with Toray Ultrasuede and the Savannah College of Art and Design to participate in BIOH polyols online contest to design a wingback chair suitable for use in today’s modern home. You can cast your vote by clicking on this site http://apps.facebook.com/contestshq/contests/56845/voteable_entries and choosing the design that most appeals to you. The winning design will be upholstered in beautiful ultrasuede using BIOh’s soy based foam, manufactured by Century and sold to the general public through Century furniture. My favorite is the Alifair chair with it’s curvy peephole “wings”. What’s yours?
This contest is a gentle reminder that we can all contribute to the environmental movement by paying attention to something as simple as how our furniture is manufactured. And isn’t it nice to have a voice in something that is good for Mother Earth? Who knows, your modern day wingback chair could become a family heirloom to be passed down from generation to generation just like your grandmother’s chair?
