We talk about fabric and design all the time on this blog.  After all, it is a design blog.  So I thought it might be fun to start a new series that decorated a make-believe room each month with furniture, fabric and accessories that are readily available on the web.  In honor of the upcoming summer months, let’s begin with a sunroom or just a casual living space in your home.

  1. Flooring–You will need something pretty and lightweight under your feet and I thought this rug was the perfect choice.  Love the texture and the flower shape.

  2.  Now we need some fabric for our upholstered furniture pieces.  Indoor/outdoor furniture is the best suggestion as it can withstand all the abuses of summer i.e. wet bathing suits, sunscreen, frolicking pets and rambunctious kids home from school.    For an up to date look let’s choose this trellis print from Waverly’s Sun n Shade collection that is neutral in color but right on trend with the pattern.  This fabric can be used to upholster furniture, as window treatments or as accent pillows on chairs and sofas.  Be sure to trim those pillows with interesting fringe, braid or ribbon for a custom look.

3.  Accessories are the final touch to decorating a room.  They include artwork, books, candles, lamps, collectibles…any item that will enhance and compliment the decor of the room…the more pesonal the better.  For example, if you have collected seashells from all your travels, place them in a big tray, basket or jar for all to see.  Perhaps your artwork was purchased while on vacation or, better yet, drawn by a family member.

This room is all neutral in color so choose some accent colors such as fern green, a peachy coral and maybe just a touch of black to “anchor” the design.  Mix and match your fabrics for a fun and casual look and you will have a sunroom or casual living space to enjoy the summer months with family and friends.
