Asphalt or composite shingles are basically the cheapest roofing materials on the market. The shingles are rated according to their expected service life. You can buy cheap shingles that are only given a 15 year life expectancy, and you can buy them in different expectancies up to approximately 40 years. The quicker you are supposed to need to replace them, the cheaper the shingles are.
Most packages, or bundles, of asphalt shingles will cover approximately 100 square foot of roof decking. They are designed to overlap when they are installed, and they require you to apply a tar paper to your decking before you lay the shingles down.
The paper has white or blue lines drawn on it in order to assist the workers in keeping the shingles in a straight line across the roof. Maintaining a proper straight line will not only be important to your look when finished, it will mean that the shingles form the channels necessary for water to flow off the roof.
If your roof does not already have shingles, and you want to go back with this material, you need to make certain that for every 12″ across your roof, it drops 3″. This is known as a 3/12 pitch, it is a very common pitch for roof construction. It will not be too steep to walk on. Any less of a pitch, and water will stand on your roof instead of flowing off. The best thing you can do is to hire professionals to install your new roofing materials. You might save money with a DIY project, but this project requires experience to achieve perfection.
