Vegetable Seeds to Sow Now for Autumn Harvests
Posted by: Andrew Brunelle in Gardening Online Add commentsTime goes by so fast in the height of the vegetable growing season and I always get caught up in summer BBQs, festivals, relaxing in the sunshine and usually I completely forget about what to sow for an autumn harvest until its too late. By too late I mean I miss Autumn completely and sow in July and August for Winter harvests instead.
So this year Im going for the sow early approach by starting off my Autumn harvesting vegetables in June, these include the following:
- Swede Ive chosen the variety Best of All as it stores well in the winter. Sow until end of June and harvest October to December.
- Spinach Ive chosen a variety I can sow from now until Autumn (up until October) called Matador which is a large leaf variety and is slow to bolt in warm weather (just in case we get anymore sun).
- Carrot My carrots havent grown very well at all this year so Im starting again now with a strong variety called Autumn King 2. Sow until the end of June, harvest in 4 5 months in Winter. If youre looking for a speedy variety, try Ideal for baby carrots in 6-8 weeks.
- Kohl Rabi Ive gone for a mixture of white, purple and green varieties Superschmeltz, Noriko Purple Delicacy sowing until late June harvesting Sept to November. Alternative Varieties include Lanro (white) or Kolibri F1 (purple).
- Kale – Fizz is a new variety bred in Britain and is ideal for stirfries harvest in 40 days. Sowing June to July. If youre not sure which variety to choose try the Kale Collection.
- Pea – Ive had a few tiny pea pods from the variety Twinkle but Im hungry for more so Ive decided on variety Jaguar to sow until late June and harvest in September, Ive sowed these in cell trays to help them get going in the rainy weather.
- Pumpkin Im really excited to be able to grow pumpkins but this is a gamble as I may have left it too late already. For the first time I have enough room on my vegetable plot for this miniature variety aptly named Munchkin. This variety of pumpkin grows up to 5 10 cm in diameter. A similar variety is Windsor F1 from Suttons Seeds.
- Pak Choi Rubi F1 as its name suggests the tops leaves are reddy purple and underneath are green. I spotted this variety last year, a striking looking vegetable so I just had to sow it.
Theres still time to sow the following vegetable seeds..
