While we may not be able to make large changes, a whole lot of little changes can add up to a revolution. If you want to make a big change the small way, then try growing a garden using permaculture techniques.
What makes a garden a small permaculture? You can learn about garden preparation tools and techniques, how to plant and tend to a garden that is raised sustainably. Contrary to what you think, this way of gardening may actually take less time.
Using only hand tools and minimal human labor is the idea behind permaculture. A small trowel, a shovel, and a rake are the only tools you’ll need. The idea here is to not disturb the soil any more than necessary.
Tilling the soil will introduce too much oxygen, which acts to kill the soil organisms that live on and around plant roots. There will be weeds since they’re not as picky about the soil where they grow.
Just like layering a mat of cardboard or thick layers of newsprint where you plan to plant, plot preparation can be simple. Weeds that are well established can be cut down before the cardboard is layered.
There’s no concern here about existing vegetation as the thick cardboard mulch will kill the weeds. From your garden shed, the dubious chemicals and poisons have been eliminated.
On top you will layer 6-12 inches of straw laid out in rows. It’s important to keep the rows wide enough in order for you to comfortably reach from both sides. It’s not necessary to dig, poison, or till the garden plot. In your garden, it’s simpler to use permaculture techniques.
Right on the soil’s surface is where you can sprinkle seeds if you want to plant them. Then pull any mulch over this. The soil retain moisture with the help of the mulch so there’s no need to water as often. As the seeds germinate and grow, the mulch breaks down and adds to the soil.
In planting, it starts like lettuce is easy and the straw is pulled back, a hole is poked in the cupboard, and the little plant is placed and the straw is pushed back. This works even in heavy soils. Try gently pulling off an older leaf to stimulate growth and allow the greenery of the plant to start to barely above the mulch.
Weeding is just snipping the emerging greenery and leave it to be added to the mulch. When the weeds go to the flowering stage, they would quickly go to seed and the idea is not to let this happen.
During harvest time, try taking a head of lettuce and cut the head off and leave the roots. You may continue to harvest and use since the lettuce will continue to produce some leaves until the first frost.
The roots will die and add to the soil over winter. When tomatoes or beans are harvested, what you do is take the fruit, pull the greens and leave with the mulch to break down. This way, there’s no composting and no waste.
One of the most responsible skills homeowners and gardeners could learn is permaculture and it’s not exactly rocket science. To the next garden spring, take a strong back and a rake.
