Home Farming Movement

On April 12, 2011, a well-known cracker company celebrated the home farming movement with its own day.

While this date is not found on any calendar nor was it set aside by a presidential decree, it still is a very important day for all of us that garden.

In the past, especially during war or through challenging economic times, individuals have gardened and shared their wares with those in need.

Today, the gardening movement has been brought on by food security worries and economic distress.

The definition of gardening has changed as times have changed. Today, you no longer need land but can garden on a windowsill, containers, and really in anything that has drainage and will hold soil.

And in many states the SNAP program or the old food stamp program will allow the client to buy seed and plants with this funding. The hope is that these individuals will grow their own food and become self-sufficient in some way.

This change in gardening has also introduced new terms that have never been heard before by the common person’s ear. Microgreens, topsy-turvy, hyperlocal, Locavore, permaculture, and backyard sharecropping are all new to the farming community. These terms have been created to describe our society’s need to farm anywhere and against all the odds of urban sprawl.

So I challenge all of you who wish you could garden but do not have the land nor the time or the space to garden. Take a stand on home farming and plant some seeds. It does not have to be complicated or require a lot of time but can simply be a cup filled with soil and seeds. Or join a community garden and plant your choice of herbs, vegetables, and fruits. If you do not know if there is a community garden near you, ask around or visit Homefarming.com.

Today there does exist some form of gardening that every single person can be involved in with very little effort. Many different products have been invented to allow apartment dwellers, the handicapped, and even those with a brown thumb to garden successfully. Reality shows are showing celebrities composting and even gardening. These individuals can also be seen picking fresh greens with their children and passing on what they know about farming. Some companies have even turned gardening into an art form that not only pleases the eye but also the palate.

So until we blog again, explore your gardening options by land, by sea, and by the Internet. And once this is done, decide where that puts thee. Start out small with a pot of herbs and before you know it the gardening movement will take hold much like the tree of life.
