DIY Herbal Wreaths

In years past I have wrought my beloved herbs in many ways.

I have dried them and placed glass jars, repotted them in decorative containers, and made wreaths out of both dried and fresh herbs.

Below are two different types of wreaths that serve different purposes but create an olfactory spa that welcomes guests and homeowner alike.

Dried Herbal Wreath

Materials

  • Straw wreath
  • Floral staples or bobby pins
  • Bunches of fresh herbs

Steps

1. Pick herbs in the morning and place in small bunches. 2. Lay out the herbs in a design that you would like for your wreath. 3. Starting in the center lay herbal bunch and secure with floral staples or bobby pins at the stem end. It is o.k. if the herbal bunches are not the same length this adds to the wreath. Just remember to secure at the stem end of the bunch. 4. Continue this process until the center is full and move to the next row following from the center outward. You can go the same direction as the past row or opposite direction again this adds character to the wreath.

This herbal wreath is great to hang in a bathroom or kitchen where heat and steam can release essential oils. The herbs from this wreath can be used for herbal baths and as a dried herb in cooking.

Another approach to herbal wreath making is to use herbal plants that will be kept over winter. This type of wreath looks great in a kitchen and adds to one’s culinary skill because fresh herbs will always be available in the kitchen. But make sure the wreath is placed on a tray or plate because it will need to be watered like any other plant.

Fresh Herbal Wreath

Materials

  • Wire wreath form
  • Starts or small pots of fresh herbs such as thyme, chives, sage, and parsley to name a few
  • Sphagnum moss
  • Good quality potting soil
  • Fishing line

Steps

1. Flip wreath form over so that the underside is facing you. Place a thin layer of sphagnum moss in wreath cavity making sure there is extra hanging over the wreath form. 2. Fill in with potting soil. 3. Fold over remaining sphagnum moss. If there is not any hanging over edge cover back of wreath with pieces of sphagnum moss. 4. Wrap fishing line around wreath to secure sphagnum moss and potting soil to wreath form. 5. Using a pencil make holes in the sphagnum moss through to the soil. Plant the herbal starts or small pots of herbs in these holes. Remember to remove plants from containers if using small pots of herbs. Push sphagnum moss back around herbs. 6. Lay wreath in a bucket of water and soak. 7. Remove from bucket, let drain and place on a decorative tray or plate. 8. Water once a week or when soil is dry. 9. Herbs can be harvested from this wreath just remove herbs like you would have if they were in the garden growing.

Regardless of which wreath you create an herbal statement will be made. So until we blog again, May scents fill one’s home, like love fill the heart.
